Bailey leans heavily into the intimacy aspect, with dashes of kink-informed possessiveness disguised as intense monogamist tendencies on Brendan’s part. I loved their conversations, and even more so the fact that they cared for each other as people (despite Piper’s best efforts to keep things just physical)– which of course led to some of the steamier scenes I’ve read in a while, with some definite hints of spice. The two of them, despite the extraordinary circumstances that allowed their lives to intersect, have an immediate chemistry. Both he and Piper are very well defined characters who have an opposites attract vibe to their relationship since their meeting isn’t filled with animosity outright. It is easy to mistake her for vain or shallow, something Brendan does immediately.īrendan “bless this man” Taggert is a man stuck in his ways, loathes deviation and change, and has been chugging along through life on autopilot for the last 7 years since losing his wife while he was out at sea captaining the boat he makes his living on. Bailey captures this snap shot of a woman who has had to live on the surface, floating along her life because she hasn’t been given any other skills, nor has her environment rewarded her for passions or quirks outside of what earns her the most interactions on social media.

But apart from the luxury brand name dropping, she has a depth to her that even she doesn’t understand. Piper is, admittedly, high maintenance and that’s also not everyone’s cup of tea. Piper is heavily inspired by Alexis from Schitt’s Creek, and if you didn’t have that context, the first few chapters would likely have been incredibly painful to get through.

I was a little surprised to hear some folks didn’t enjoy this novel, and I think it may have been due to skipping the Author’s Note in the beginning of the book.
